Leather. 8vo. Jonathan Cape & The Medici Society Ltd., London, UK. 1923. xxx, 439 pgs; xxii, 506 pgs.Illustrated with 24 full page color plates. Later Printing. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in 3/4 brown calf with boards ruled in gilt with raised bands, decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments. Marble endpapers. Boards have light wear present to the extremities of the boards. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement and by the stylized neoclassical art of the Renaissance, William Russell Flint (1880-1969) was educated at the Royal Institute of Art, Edinburgh. He began his career on the staff of Illustrated London News 1903-1907 but "from this period onwards.turned increasingly to watercolour, particularly for the illustration of colour books. He was strongly influenced by the illustrations of Rip Van Winkle by Arthur Rackham and between 1905 and 1924 produced a whole series of brilliant luxury editions for the Riccardi Press of the Medici Society. His figures are finely modeled and contain elements of a Burne-Jones influence by way of Byam Shaw" (Houfe). Sir William Russell Flint RA (4 April 1880 – 30 December 1969) was a Scottish artist and illustrator who was known especially for his watercolour paintings of women. He also worked in oils, tempera, and printmaking.
