Estate sale find, vintage original NCR Microform Smallest Bible in the World (1245 Pages) circa 1960's.
At the 1964 New York World's Fair, the National Cash Register Company (NCR) unveiled a new microfilm technology at their pavilion.
NCR proclaimed a technology that could "reproduce the entire Bible on a small card, or store the Library of Congress in six filing cabinets"! Known as "PCMI", it allowed entire books to be printed in miniature on a sheet of film that could then, in turn, be read under magnification.
Microfilm had existed for some time, but the PCMI technology allowed a far-greater level of miniaturization then had ever been seen before.  NCR unveiled the technology using a microfilm (or "microform") Bible, designed to be read under magnification at 100 power.
NCR displayed the Bibles at their pavilion as a means of introducing the public to the technology, prior to commercializing it in 1966. Indeed, microfilm technology was a revolutionary milestone in efforts to condense data, in an era long before the personal computer.
The reproduction of the 1,245 pages in this edition of the Holy Bible on the attached tiny slide is the result of the scientific achievement by the Research and Development Staff of the NCR (National Cash Register) Corporation, Dayton, Ohio.
Each of the 773,746 words of the Scriptures appear in this incredibly small space. It includes both the Old and New Testaments in easy-to-read type.
There are also many amazing coincidences surrounding the "Lunar Bibles," and one of the most remarkable occurred at the 1964 Worlds Fair.
Each of the display pavilions at the 1964 Worlds Fair was given a name, and NCR's could not have been more apt.   NCR could be conveniently found in the fashionable "Court of the Moon," located directly across from the "Lunar Fountain."
    Little did they know...
The technology now existed to print a Bible that was portable enough to accompany an astronaut to the lunar surface in quantity.  A major hurdle was thus overcome for Reverend Stout, who would later immortalize NCR's Bibles as the first to ever land on another world.
In 1971 the Apollo 14 lunar module piloted by Edgar D. Mitchell carried 100 of the NCR Microform bibles aboard the lunar module Antares. They were the first Bibles to go to the Moon, and back.
The item measures approximately 2.5" X 3", approximate shipping weight 3 ounces
