Description
You're bidding on "Vanity Fair - A Novel Without A Hero", written and illustrated by William Makepeace Thackeray, first edition published 1848 by Harper & Brothers, New York. A lengthy social satire, the work - considered Thackeray's masterpiece and one of the greatest English novels - was first serialized over 20 installments in Punch Magazine in 1847-1848. Published in book form in 1848, it was a major success on both sides of the pond. This is the U.S. first edition - less collectible than the British, but still a rare find.
NOTE - some significant issues of condition - mainly that it appears to have been wet at some point, and pages are stained to varying degrees throughout - although note that it's still quite
readable and overall not a particularly distressed copy - no mildew/odor, and minimal foxing for age and type. Boards are a bit warped - decent presentation spine-out from the shelf - red cloth with red leather label and gilt stamped titling. Appears complete with all content - including Thackeray's own illustrations, which are rarely published in reissues and even more rarely at this level of quality. SOLD AS IS AS FOUND.
