Description
U.S. Civil War Book on US Infantry & Rifle Tactics 1861This is an original U.S. Civil War Book on U.S. Infantry & Rifle Tactics Complete, 1861, Hardee's Tactics, Standard War Dept. Manual J.B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia. This tactics manual belonged to Edwin S Gilbert. On April 25, 1861 E.S. Gilbert enrolled, April 25, 1861, at Rochester; mustered in as second lieutenant, Co. D, May 14, 1861, to serve two years; as captain, Co. K, October 26, 1861; transferred to Co. B, Twenty-fifth Infantry, New York Volunteers, February 20, 1862; commissioned second lieutenant, July 4, 1861, with rank from May 1, 1861, original; not commissioned captain. He later became a Lieutenant Colonel. He passed away in Rochester in February 1863 of consumption. The book is signed with "E.S Gilbert" in a few places, and then signed by another 1st Lieutenant who's name I cannot make out, with notes on buying this book from Captain ES Gilbert on Dec 2nd 1861 at a location I cannot read.
The tactics manual was one of the first things every soldier received. It had a lot of information about how to handle a weapon. There are chapters on fighting, calls, and the Articles of War. The manual also includes a dictionary of military terms. This is a wonderful piece of Civil War history.
See photos for condition (ink staining/tears/missing pull outs?) and please feel free to ask any questions.
