    Description

You're bidding on "The Standard Oil Company", by Elbert Hubbard, published 1910 by the Roycrofters, East Aurora, NY. The book is a softcover pamphlet publication of an opinion piece authored by Hubbard for one of his magazines, "The Fra", in defense of Standard Oil, which was facing another lawsuit by the US Government filed in 1909 that would ultimately result in further deregulation of the company. Standard Oil, in turn, commissioned a run of this pamphlet.
On the face of it, it seems odd that Hubbard, whose Roycroft artisan community was built around the concepts of handicraft and quality, would champion an enormous mechanized corporation. He had personal admiration for John D. Rockefeller, though, whose rise from poverty to the head of America's largest corporation lined up with Hubbard's philosophies of self-reliance and individualism. The pamphlet champions the company as a winner of capitalism through constant innovation and being better than the competition, rather than an anti-capitalist monopoly squashing all competitors.
A scarce piece to find - condition is quite good for age and type. Cover does have some light wrinkle & bumping at edges, but clean and appealing in appearance. No damage to the string binding and pages are clean throughout.
