Hardbound in good condition, 211 pages includes a Preface, Contents, Frontispiece and List of Illustrations, Maps and an Index plus 3 pages of additional Publications of the London Missionary Society. Measures approximately 7 ¼" " x 8 ½", no dust jacket, likely none issued.
The boards are covered in red cloth with black lettering and ornate graphic designs on the spine and cover. They are lightly soiled, slightly faded around the edges with a few spots but still attractive. Rounding is noted to the corners and creases at the ends of the spine, very modest wear to the edges, no frank tears, worn through areas or significant fraying.  The book has been fitted with a Dust Jacket of clear Archival Quality material to help protect it in the future.
The interior reveals contents to be clean and firmly bound, no loose or misaligned pages. The fly page presents a publisher printed London Missionary Society Presentation dated January, 1895 that has been filled in by a Sunday School Reverend. Age toning is noted, but foxing only to the fly pages front and rear that seems to correlate with the book binding paste used under the end papers.  There are no further ownership indications, no marking, creases or tears. In all, for a 125 year old book targeted at “young people”, this is quite an attractive copy.

THE STORY OF THE SOUTH SEAS is an accounting of the author’s tour through the South Seas visiting the various missions. Mr. Cousins is devoutly religious, beginning each chapter with a phrase or short verse from the Bible and never does he stray far from the sacred purpose of his tour.
Throughout, the book is illustrated with some b/w photos and many, many line-type etchings of wonderful quality and detail. Many of these are full page and include not only scenery, but also portraits of individuals and most interestingly, some of the tools and items of everyday usage by the local residents. Most are unsigned and no specific artistic credit given yet it would certainly seem that some mention would be due. They are quite exquisite.
THE STORY OF THE SOUTH SEAS is an outstanding work for its artistic presentation and the observations the author subjectively relates to the reader. It would be an excellent choice for one collecting missionary or Pacific Island literature.
