    Description

I'm pleased to offer this Ilmenite crystal from the Coe's mine, Litchfield, Litchfield County, Connecticut. The crystal measures 2.16 x 1.59 x .23 inches or 5.49 x 4.04 x .59cm and is from the Erich Laskowski (1949-2020) collection of Tucson, Arizona. Erich likely collected this piece during his college days at SUNY when he frequently collected in the Northeast, Ontario and Quebec. He went on to Washington State University and received his Master's Degree in Geology. He later worked for AMAX at several Colorado properties, the Hayden Mill gold mine in California and for Freeport McMoRan at their Bagdad mine, Arizona location. I recently purchased the bulk of his collection from his estate and have begun pulling out specimens to list on eBay.
This is a nearly complete single crystal with well-developed faces. I examined the crystal under the loupe and much of the lower portion is actually complete but, at first glance, appears to be broken. There are also some curious "contour lines" on portions of the crystal---very cool. These typically are found frozen in quartz at the locality. This mine was first worked over two centuries ago and is noted for its ilmenite and kyanite specimens. This piece is a bit unusual in that it is free of the quartz and not all broken up and chipped---ilmenite is very brittle. Nice piece!
