Description
I'm pleased to offer this specimen of Pintadoite with possible Fernandinite from the Deremo (Deremo-Snyder), Egnar, San Miguel County, Colorado. The specimen measures 1.90 x 1.51 x 1.28 inches or 4.82 x 3.84 x 3.24cm and is from a Phoenix, Arizona collection from which I was allowed to pluck mostly non-Arizona pieces. This comes with a label from David Shannon Minerals, formerly of Mesa, AZ and the address on the label dates this piece to 1976-1990 when DSM operated out of their W. Drake Circle address.Pintadoite is a calcium vanadate hydrate and is known from few localities worldwide. Mindat.org, the world's most comprehensive mineralogy website, does not list pintadoite as occurring at the Deremo mine but the site is necessarily incomplete. The mineralogy of the deposit certainly suggests that it is a probable occurrence and there is no reason to doubt the DSM label. The Deremo mine had three shafts, the Deremo No. 1 and No. 2 and the Snyder shaft. These were oftentimes a few thousand feet apart and were collectively known as the Deremo-Snyder mine back when this was collected. The label hints at possible fernandinite and this could explain the very subtle color differences seen on the display surface. I have no experience with either pintadoite or fernandinite and will list the mineral on my label followed by a question mark.
The mine was worked for uranium and vanadium up until 1980 at least. There has been additional drilling, exploration and mining in the area since that time with the primary targets being uranium and vanadium. The ores occur in Upper Jurassic-aged sandstones of the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation. The host rock for this specimen is this sandstone.
