Description
I'm pleased to offer this specimen of Joseite in Quartz from Glacier Gulch, Smithers, British Columbia, Canada. The specimen measures 2.36 x 1.53 x .87 inches or 6.00 x 3.89 x 2.20cm and features dark, lustrous cleavages of joseite in quartz. This is from the Erich Laskowski (1949-2020) collection of Tucson, Arizona and comes with his informal and handwritten label. His label states this to be "Joseite with Native Gold" but I've spent 15-20 minutes examining this under the loupe and under the microscope at 10-30X and can find no gold on the specimen. This was in a flat of material marked "for trade" and was the only such piece in the flat. I recently purchased the bulk of his collection from his estate and am having fun going through it at my leisure. I was so impressed by the ore specimens that I examined that I agreed to buy the whole storage locker without looking at all the material! The Glacier Gulch locality is an old gold prospect most noted for these specimens. Joseite was described from the Sao Jose mine, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Glacier Gulch prospect is the type locality for joseite-A and joseite-B and the mineral is a bismuth tellurium sulfide. I've had two of these before from British Columbia but neither were anywhere close to this one in terms of quality. The joseite on this piece is quite pronounced and is extremely lustrous. In addition to the large cleavage, there are smaller masses of the mineral in the matrix as well. This is an excellent piece---much better than most I've seen on the market over the years.
