Up for auction is a rare volume with a fascinating provenance. The volume is titled:Hudibras The First Part Written In the Time of the Late Wars. Corrected and Amended With Several Additions and Annotations
. London: Printed by J.M. for Geo. Sawbridge; and Sold by Math. Hawkins, at the Angel in St. Paul’s Church -Yard. 1709.
This volume contains the elaborate decorative
bookplate of The Right Honorable Francis North Baron of Guilford 1703.

Francis North, 2nd Baron Guilford PC (14 December 1673 – 17 October 1729) was a British peer and member of the House of Lords. Life In 1685, he succeeded his father Francis North as Baron Guilford. In 1701 he was one of five peers of the realm who voted against the Act of Settlement (which excluded the House of Stuart from the English throne) in the House of Lords, and who felt strongly enough to enter written protests in the House of Lords Journal. From 1703 to 1705, Guilford was Lord Lieutenant of Essex. In 1712, he was appointed to the Privy Council, and was First Lord of Trade from 1713 to 1714. “

I believe there is more on Maubailllarcq on the web in French and Spanish. Nevertheless this edition of Hudibras has a wonderful historical background.

Condition :
Bound in full leather it has been re-backed (with a new spine) that being the only area restored. The cover boards are original to the volume. Internally the book is complete and tightly bound with end papers title page and preface with 1st 2nd and 3rd Cantos and The Lady’s Answer to The Knight. As always any questions feel free to ask.
