    Description

    Paradise
    LIMITED
    AN INFORMAL HISTORY OF THE
    FABULOUS HAWAIIANS
    by
    THOMAS BLAKE CLARK
    MODERN AGE BOOKS    New York
    Copyright 1941
    Second Printing, December 1941
Hardbound in good condition with dust jacket, 299 pages with frontispiece and 6 additional full page b/w illustrations, measures approximately 6" x 8 ¾".       The dust jacket presents a wonderful combination of a historical rendering lavished with Hawaiian accents.  This is the type of display that became so popular in the earlier 20th century.  The cover is worn with edge tears and chipping to the corners and ends of the spine. Minor repairs were made to the edge tears with acid-free mending tissue and the jacket has been placed in an Archival Quality clear Mylar jacket protector to preserve it in the future.
The boards are covered in cloth, two separate pieces, blue to the lower portion and aqua to the upper with titles blind stamped in silver.  They are clean, free of fading, corners slightly rounded but no severe bumps, minimal wear to the edges, no tears or fraying..
The interior reveals age toned contents that are clean and firmly bound with no loose or misaligned pages.  There is a previous owner dedication mid-page on the fly with the date "1942" in the upper free corner. No no further ownership indications are noted, no marks, creases or tears.
"Here is history at its informal best.  The author is faithful to the facts.  But it is what catches his fancy about the facts that makes such entrancing reading.  Anecdote follows anecdote about the charming and childlike Hawaiians and their rulers, about the first adventurous white men to settle there, about such eminent visitors as Mark Twain and the Duke of Edinburgh, about the bitter struggle between the Men of God and the Rum-swigging, love-seeking whalers and traders§each in defense of respective versions of Paradise§which ended with a law forbidding men to sleep with their women in the streets." -

Mr. Clark presents a fascinating selection of short subjects demonstrating his ability to empathize and present history from different vantage points.  Some are perhaps not quite historically correct or morally commendable, but never the less, very interesting reading.  This particular copy in very good condition with its Rare dust jacket would be a choice addition to a Hawaiiana collection.  USPS Priority Mail Delivery, securely packed to prevent shipping damage, USPS Priority International Mail Delivery by the pound/kil to 180 countries worldwide. Flat Rate Boxes available for large orders. GE tax applicable on sales to all residents of the State of Hawaii.
    (Excerpt)
"Beachboys have an excellent sense of humor and a spontaneous, good-natured wit.  They dub each other with outlandish names§Hailie Selassie, Tough Bill, Panama Joe§an take advantage of the naïve tourist by supplying him with fantastic stories about sharks and hurricanes."
