Description
You're bidding on "Our Unseen Guest", anonymous authorship, first edition published 1920 by Harper & Brothers, New York. The authors, called "Darby" and "Joan" in the book, stumble across a Ouija board in 1916 in the sitting room of a boarding house - never having seen a board before, they read the instructions and soon make contact with a spirit, "Stephen". They go on to become spirit mediums for Stephen to tell his story and explain the mysteries of the afterlife, his ability to communicate, and other mysteries of the spiritual realm. The authors were eventually revealed to be Emmitt and Ruth Ebright Finley - both seasoned reporters and editors, who kept their anonymity to protect their careers. Stephen's identity was later
discovered in Ruth's notes to be Richard Hall, an American ambulance volunteer who was killed by a German shell in 1915.
Book is in good condition for age and type - Boards are reasonably clean with some minor soil/rubbing and bumping at the corner tips. Spinecloth is quite spoiled and spotted. Some hinge cracking inside front board, but board still fully attached and solid binding. A number of ownership inscriptions/stamps on the front endpaper and pastedown. Note several instances of pencil marginalia, but pages are generally clean.
Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking!
