For all these years I have patiently and in exile striven to fit myself for the return this year to my native country. I am now told that Mr. Thurston is in Washington asking you to take away my flag and my throne. No one tells me even this officially. Have I done anything wrong, that this wrong should be done to me and my people? I am coming to Washington to plead for my throne, my nation and my flag. Will not the great American people hear me . . .?" - PRINCESS KAIULANI

PRINCESS KAIULANI is truly a remarkable work by a talented and devoted author. It is the culmination of years of research that included personal visits to Kaiulani’s school and residences in Europe plus the American cities visited by the young princess prior to her return to Hawaii. Every detail of consequence is documented from the birth of Princess Kaiulani till her tragic passing in 1899 at only 23 years of age. A collection of approximately 200 impressively sized photos is incorporated into the text, producing the most comprehensive documentation issued thus far.
"I must have been born under an unlucky star, as I seem to have my life planned out for me in such a way that I cannot alter it..." Princess Kaiulani - Rozel, Jersey, In the Summer of 1897.
This oversized publication is a literary tribute to the life of this admired Princess, one who was being groomed as the next Queen of Hawaii, yet passed away, surrounded in mystique, while still in her youth. Included are historical photo plates of the people privileged to mingle with the royal family, of her homes and special places in Hawaii plus places she visited during her travels abroad and while being schooled in England; plus correspondences giving insight into her arranged absence and the attempt to with political knowledge from her during the period of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy.
This is the 1st Edition, 1st printing issued in 1976, followed by a softbound copy that was  subsequently replaced by the much smaller sized, condensed, economical version most often seen in the later '90s and after.  Today, some 45 years later, 1st edition 1976 hard bound copies of PRINCESS KAIULANI THE LAST HOPE OF HAWAII'S MONARCHY are seldom available yet unparalleled in their coverage and the lovely painted portrait representations of the Princess Kai.  This particular Fine copy, also Signed by the Author would be a wonderful addition to an Island Collection.
"For many miles distant anxious people knew the precise hour of the Princess' death, because her pet peacocks at Ainahau began a wild screaming at 2 a.m.  Loud and long their almost human cries pierced the night air."  excerpt page 144.
