Description
You're bidding on "History Of The Indians Of Connecticut From The Earliest Known Period To 1850", by John W. DeForest, published 1851 by Wm. Jas. Hamersley, Hartford. Commissioned by the Connecticut Historical Society in 1850, the work is considered the first comprehensive scholarly history of the Connecticut tribes, and a very early example of a Native American themed historical work of any type - interesting for its suprisingly positive attitude (for its time) towards its subject and often critical attitude towards the treatment of Native Americans by settlers and state and federal government - but still rife with terms like "savages" and "primitives", and controversial for its map, which depicts the entire state of Connecticut in 1630 as mostly uninhabited away from the coastal areas.Book is in good condition for age and type - Cloth exhibits fray and chipping at the board and spine edges, and cracking in the seams between the boards and spine - although note no hinge cracking. Clean in appearance, though, with nice gilded titling on the spine cloth that will look nice from the shelf. Binding is solid. Note that two pages to have tape-repaired tears (see photos) - otherwise clean throughout save for some occasional isolated issues of spotting and old ownership inscriptions in pen and pencil within the front endpapers. Complete, including the fold-out map in good condition, and several illustration plates.
Nice, scarce to find important historical text - please review photos carefully to make your own determination of condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding. Thanks for looking!
