"A detailed view of the first fifty years of telephone technology"
Here is another FIND from one of my over 500 boxes of books, ephemera and just stuff. It took 60+ years to accumulate these treasures, and each week, I retrieve a dozen or so boxes from my storage units and post some selected items on eBay.
SEE DISCOUNT DEAL BELOW.
The book is the first of seven volumes covering the
History of Engineering & Science in the Bell System (I have also posted the second volume on eBay today).
See photos 6 & 7 (showing the Contents & Foreword) for the coverage of this great book on telephone history.
The book goes beyond the technical innovation aspects, and examines the underlying motivations and
evaluates
the long-term importance of the
engineering
, scientific, and organizational achievements that were the substance of the first five-decades of remarkable progress in telecommunications. Beginning with Bell's invention in 1874/76, the telephone industry grew to nearly seventeen million telephones by 1925.
A
s seen in the Contents, the book covers Bell's original invention, central station switching, the advent of radio, materials and components and more.
Several pages discuss the work by Arnold, Weinhart, & Nicolson in vacuum tube development at Bell Telephone: the 101D, "L", the 102D, "V", 101
, 102F, VT-1, VT-2, 215A, "N", as well as high power tubes.
Included is a 28-page list of references (useful for further research) followed by a 29-page index. Truly a book for the inquisitive telephone historian.
The book itself is in Very Good condition, 1073 (yes, one-thousand+) pages with over 500 photographs and illustrations. The book is clean with a pencil inscription (which is partially erased, probably could be completely erased). The dust Jacket is a bit battered (see photos).
