[The History of Echizen Uchihamono]
700 years of tradition. It all started with a single sword maker. It is said that Echizen Uchihamono began in 1337 when a swordsmith from Kyoto, Chiyotsuru Kuniyasu, came to Echizen City in search of a suitable place to make swords, and while doing so, made sickles for the local farmers.
Later, during the Edo period (1603-1868), the technique was passed down to various craftsmen and developed. Today, Echizen Uchihamono continues to produce knives for cooking, sickles for agriculture and gardening, machetes, kari-gomi scissors, and hoes, while maintaining the traditional Japanese fire forging techniques and hand finishing.
Echizen Uchihamono is highly regarded for its history and techniques, and in 1979 became the first cutlery production area in Japan to be designated as a traditional craft.
As the times have changed, Echizen Uchihamono has transformed its excellent techniques into daily utensils that are closely related to our daily lives, expanding its range from familiar cooking utensils such as kitchen knives to products related to agriculture, forestry, gardening, and fishing. In this way, Echizen Uchihamono continues to evolve to become more user-friendly and beautiful as it pursues functionality and form to meet the needs of everyday life.
