    Description

You're bidding on "Battles And Leaders Of The Civil War", Complete in 8 volumes, published by The Century Co., New York. Copyright dates within the books indicate 1884-1887 copyright dates, but these volumes are indicated as the "Grant-Lee Edition", which was advertised in The Century Magazine in 1911 as a 7 1/2" X 10 1/2" 8 volume edition, designed to be easier to use compared to the original, which was four, massive volumes of 750 pages each.
Over four years from 1884 to 1887, The Century Magazine published "The Century War Series", which was a monthly series of two or three chronologically arranged stories describing the important events of the conflict, often penned by commanders, officers or other significant participants in the events. Hugely popular at the time, Century Co. editors Robert Underwood Johnson and Clarence Clough Buel arranged the series into book form, and these volumes remain important resources to this day as well edited, detailed primary source works. They are also beautifully and prodigiously illustrated with maps and engravings by some of the finest illustrators and engravers of the period.
Note that this set has some issues of condition - mainly some spotting and soil to the page and board edges, as well as some light soil to the boards and spinecloth. Vol II Part II has a small ding at the bottom open-side corner of the rear board. Also note the the books do have a slight odor, as though they were near a wood stove or something. Spine-out, from the shelf, though, they present very nicely, and they are still solidly bound with clean pages.
Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking!
