    Description

    Antique Handpainted Japanese Lusterware Serving Condiment Dish Set and Lacquered Wood Box C 1940's. The lusterware (lustreware) dishes are in very good preowned condition with only two areas of imperfection to point out. One of the outside dishes has a chip where the top of a corner is missing. The center dish has a crack which is visible more clearly underneath the piece. Please see the photos.
    Otherwise, I found no other chips, cracks or crazing. This is still an extremely desireable and collectable set. The dishes have a lovely bluebird and orange fruit motif. The white glaze on the base shines iridescently. The lacquered box is a dark red with a beautifully painted bluebird and fruit design. It does have some very minor chipping around the edges of the box.
    The box measures 10” in diameter and is 1.5” tall. The porcelain center round dish measures about 5.25" in diameter. The outside dishes are about 5.75" X 3".
    Lustreware (or Lusterware) is a pottery with a metallic glaze that gives the special effect of iridescence.  The final glaze lustre is usually composed of different metallic ingredients.
    Each dish is imprinted on the base with a "Hand Painted Japan" maker's mark with a flower and H in the center of it. Tentative production date: 1920-40. The mark is attributable the Hotta Yu Shoten & Co. Pottery in operation from 1920 to 1947. The logo is in fact a depiction of cherry blossom. The shop selling the wares was the Hotta Yu Co. This firm made an array of tableware and kitchen ware, as well as very cute animals.
