    Pyrite Sun in matrix from Sparta, Illinois.  The Pyrite Sun features radiating fanned crystals measuring 3.35" x 2.4" (85mm x 61mm).  These are also known as Pyrite Dollars and Sun Dollars.  Collected in a coal mine hundreds of feet below the earth's surface, this sun formed over 300 million years ago.  The Pyrite crystals formed between the thin layers of slate, compressed from the lack of room to grow and creating the unique Sun crystal formation.  The Pyrite Sun is secured to the slate matrix rock to prevent the piece from detaching.  Piece weighs over 1 lb.  A beautiful Pyrite Sun in matrix specimen great for display, collection, and study.
