This book is a summation of all things related to the 1936 election, information pertaining to Democratic contributions within the branches of government and various departments, as well as improvements to, and the advent of certain government programs.
Mass media has certainly changed over the course of the last 84 years. How could a Democrat of the 1930's learn about the events of the DNC and the progress of his President and party? While Roosevelt was the first President to appear on television, this wasn't until its World's Fair debut in 1939. In 1936, radio was exceedingly popular, however it broadcast news only a few hours a day, and was not an all-encompassing resource of the goings-on of Washington. With limited sources for national news, people were able to read about these things in political publications like these.
Within this large book, you'll find Roosevelt's nomination acceptance speech, that of his Vice President, and additional addresses made at the 1936 Democratic Nominating Convention. The Convention Proceedings are outlined, as well as the entire Democratic Platform. The 1936 election results are detailed, both by popular vote and the Electoral College.
A testament to FDR's character and a signed photograph head up a section detailing progress under his leadership. A history of the Democratic party, the story of Congress, the Supreme Court, the Departments of State, Treasury, Justice, Agriculture, Labor, and others are all described, specifically as they relate to areas of progress attributed to the party and its leaders.
Readers could learn about various programs, like the one instituted by the Resettlement Administration which helped 600,000 farming families get back on their feet by obtaining reasonable credit for rehabilitation loans. Roosevelt's administration worked with the VA to ensure pension and compensation payments were made to living vets and the dependents of deceased vets. The Rural Electrification Administration was new, and devoted to bringing about acceptable standards of rural life - with only 1 in 9 farms equipped with electricity, funds had been earmarked and research was underway for improving these numbers. And, of course, new information regarding Social Security, which was still in its infancy, was detailed herein.
Features on Democratic women in politics, the story of the White House, and the burgeoning Young Democratic Clubs of America are also included, as well as copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and its Amendments.
    Most enjoyably,
there are dozens of pages of ads dispersed throughout this publication.
    There are
    full-color ads
for companies like Firestone, Budweiser, and Chrysler. Beautifully
    detailed black-and-white ads
can be seen throughout for Electrolux, GE, Paramount Pictures, Lucky Strikes, John Deere, and even bananas.
This is a unique piece of Democratic history and our longest-serving President! A must-have for anyone interested in Depression Era history!
